Naughty List - How The Alien Stole Christmas

Good Morning everyone and Happy Friday! Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Belle Scarlett to my blog. She's a fellow member of the Naughty Literati and her short story, How The Alien Stole Christmas is part of the great boxed set, Naughty List.

How did you come up with the idea for your latest book?

The Naughty Literati’s Naughty List started off as a Christmas holiday themed boxed set of stories (then later changed to stories set in winter). I knew I wanted to do a futuristic, sexy love story between a human female and a sexy humanoid alien male so I started riffing on classic Christmas story titles – It’s a Wonderful Alien, that sort of thing – until I came up with How the Alien Stole Christmas. From there, the story told me how it wanted to unfold.

What’s coming up next for you in your writing?

I’m working on several WIPs, as always, but the immediate deadline is for The Naughty Literati’s next box set for Valentine’s Day… this one is a sexy time travel piece called Valentime.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“The Titanic was built by professionals. Noah was an amateur.” First, I love irony and this anonymous quote is full of that. Second, while I think professionalism in any endeavor is important, putting too much stock in one’s own hubris will sink you every time.

What advice would you offer to aspiring writers?

Read voraciously, whatever it is you love to read. And then write them the way you love to read them. That’s the fun part. Next, the bitch part… you have to read a bunch of badly written stuff, too. In my other life I’m a producer and screenplay consultant in Hollywood and, when I was coming up through the development ranks at the studios, I read over 6,000 really bad screenplays in the slush piles that (thankfully!) never made it to film. But in reading the bad stuff I figured out what NOT to do in my own writing, and that was just as valuable to my literary education as reading the classics or best sellers.

In a nod to the Actor’s Studio, what's your favorite curse word and why?

I actually don’t curse all that often. The benefit of that is when I find myself in a position where I have to say, “Fuckity-fuck!” or “What the bloody fuck, y’all?!”, people around me tend to listen up fast.

I asked if you understand me, soldier.

Christie needed release, and she needed it now. She gulped some air and started unzipping her flight uniform in anticipation of the next phase of their play.

“Yes, sir. I understand. Please, sir, permission to touch myself?”

The computer was silent for a moment. Then Blitz’s next message unfurled across her vid-screen.

Permission denied.

Christie froze in disbelief, her hand in mid-zip on her flight suit.

What? She glared at his words. Screw that, she thought rebelliously, and seriously considered disobeying a direct order from him for the first time ever.

Blitz seemed to read her mind.

Don’t even think about it, sweetheart. I’ll know if you’re being naughty or nice.

Frustration sizzled through her as she stopped unzipping her suit. Damn her submissive streak. She hadn’t even known she possessed one until she’d encountered Blitzen. As an experienced sexual dominant he had recognized her latent submissive qualities right away, and quickly set about training her in the art of pleasing him during their online play. Now her body wanted to do whatever he told it to do. And that was starting to prove freaking inconvenient.

“Ha. What can you do about it from there? Text me a lump of coal for my stocking?”

Don’t sass me, soldier. You don’t want to find out what I can do about it if you disobey me.

Christie bit her lip. For better or for worse, her sexual satisfaction was now tied to his and she knew it. If he didn’t want her to come, her body would side with him even if her mind was furious at them both.

He was probably just teasing her, as part of the cyber play. Maybe some more sugar would help matters.

“I’m sorry, sir. Please? May I come?”

I like when you beg me, Mistletoe. I grow even harder for you.

“Is that a yes?” She asked hopefully.

Nope. My order stands.

“I can’t believe this!” Blitzen had never seriously forbidden her to climax before.

Believe it. I own your next orgasm. It’s mine. From now on, you will save that delight for me to share, control, and enjoy.

She shivered. He couldn’t be serious. Who knew if they would ever even meet, or when?

“You’re ruthless, you know.”

Yes. And you’re sexy as hell and hard to resist. But I mean it, princess. The next time you climax it will be with your wet pussy tight around my hard cock, squeezing me with every thrust until I come deep inside you.

Christie instantly pictured them together on a large bed in full-on, carnal coitus. Her clit twitched in spasm, yearning to uncork the full orgasm bottled inside her pussy. She could feel her back arch in aroused response.

Damn, this guy was good. He had tuned her fantasies so well over the past two months that she could envision every sexy detail he described exactly as if he was in the room doing it to her.

Okay, okay! I surrender, already,” Christie half groaned, half laughed. She struggled to get her rioting body back under control.

It’s not my fault you have a hair-trigger libido, sweetheart.

She could almost hear his warm, male chuckle in her ear.

“You wouldn’t be able to get me so aroused so fast if your titillating star messages took days instead of seconds over sub-space frequencies,” she grumbled.

Wanna bet?

Naughty List - On the Eighteenth of January '78

Good Morning everyone! Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Regina Kammer to my blog. She's a fellow member of the Naughty Literati and her short story, On the Eighteenth of January '78 -or- A Night at Valley Forge is part of the great boxed set, Naughty List.

Here's an opportunity to get to know Regina and then I'll share the short blurb for her story and an excerpt!

Which person in your life influenced you the most with your writing?

Chris Baty, the founder of National Novel Writing Month. Chris believes anyone can write a novel and challenges people to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. I took up that challenge back in 2006 and have been having fun as an author ever since. Every time I see him, he is super encouraging, as well.

Is one of your books your personal favorite? Why?

“The General’s Wife: An American Revolutionary Tale” is my favorite. It’s both erotica—with the sexual journey of the heroine—and romance—with a Happily Ever After, plus it’s an adventure story with a lot of history. It is the epitome of what I set out to write when I decided to become a writer. It’s also self-published so there are some naughty scenes that I’m certain most publishers would balk at.

What’s coming up next for you in your writing?

Besides the Naughty List anthology I’m in with another American Revolution-set short story,I’m hoping to explore Steampunk a little more. The genre dovetails very well with the Victorian era, which I love writing, but there is freedom to add little twists to technology and the historical timeline.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?

A steaming hot bath with a cocktail and romance novel. This is so much more guilt-inducing when performed in drought-stricken California.

Where would you like to visit and why?

I’d love to go back to Turkey. I’m an art historian and Turkey is one of those “crossroads of civilization” places. Neolithic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman art and archaeology abound. Plus the food is amazing.

In a nod to the Actor’s Studio, what's your favorite curse word and why?

“Bollocks” for Brits, “Shit” for Americans. I love using these in my historicals! They suggest massive disappointment in one terse word.

“I saw him today,” Zeb said quietly.

Him could only refer to one man. Zeb held General George Washington in something more than high regard. He worshipped the man, hoping for a chance to see him every day, blushing and fawning like a virgin miss at an assembly hall during a country dance whenever the general happened across their squad. Barn wasn’t sure if it was endearing or unseemly.

Yet, it was too easy to fall under the spell that was “GW”. The general had an allure, a magnetism that drew all in, making women swoon and men want to serve. If the notion of independent states, the freedom to rise above circumstance of birth, the prospect of taxes building a nation rather than filling a king’s coffers did not attract the sons and daughters of America, then GW the man certainly did. Just his very presence got one’s blood to boil against tyranny, set one’s pulse beating to the rhythm of liberty, urged one’s feet to march for freedom.

GW was the sole reason why twelve thousand American soldiers camped on a plateau above a captured Philadelphia, keeping a watchful eye on the British while enduring freezing rains and the privations of civilized life, lacking proper clothes, nourishing food, suffering the pains of amputation and the stench of death.

“He was on foot,” Zeb murmured. “His great height the equal of mine own, yet I felt so small before him. His blue eyes penetrated my soul as he asked such simple questions—”

Zeb’s cock sprang to life in his clothes, pushing into Barn’s left butt cheek. Barn stifled a sigh.

“Did we have enough tools? Was there enough wood?”

Barn reached around and slowly unfastened the buttons at the fall of Zeb’s breeches. As always, Zeb gave no protest.

“He seemed very concerned our hut had not yet been constructed.”

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2b/Washington-at-ValleyForge.jpgBarn snorted. “Yeah, well, with Alex and Johnny laid up with dysentery and Zack dead, it’s been slow going.”

Zeb did not respond. He merely adjusted himself to allow Barn’s questing fingers better access at the placket of his drawers. Barn struggled to contain his zeal.

“He took off his hat to speak to me. His gray hair was still tinged with a touch of the auburn of his youth.”

Freed from its prison of clothes, Zeb’s magnificent manhood bobbed impetuously. Barn gripped the hard flesh, closing his eyes as heat from the intimate connection seeped through his fingerless gloves to course through his body.

“His timbre was melodious, almost enchanting. I could listen to him talk about felling trees all day.”

Barn chuckled. “And not do any felling yourself, hmm?”

Again Zeb ignored him, instead steering the conversation to his favorite topic. “How do you think he guards against the cold all alone in his tent?” There was a poignant earnestness to his question.

Barn twisted around to face his companion, the adulation and concern in Zeb’s expression softly illuminated by the dying campfire outside. “I’m sure his greatcoat keeps him plenty warm.” Zeb’s devotion to GW spawned a fragility that impelled Barn to want to protect his tent mate, to comfort him in the only way he knew how.

Chapter One

Whitewolf, Colorado, December 1905

“All the books have been shelved, Mrs. Kelly.” Lizzy Redwolf pinned on her hat. “With it being Friday night, you’d best be leaving shortly. You know how those men at the saloon can get.”

“Yes, I certainly do, Mrs. Redwolf.”

Abigail Kelly straightened her shoulders as she finished cataloging the newest books for the library. It wouldn’t be long until the noise of her nearest neighbors took over the night and brawls would spill out the doors and into the streets. So far she’d managed to avoid all of it.

All of it but the saloon owner himself. William Goldwolf made his disapproval of the new town library—and by extension, the new librarian—perfectly clear. The kindest thing he’d said was that the library was a waste of taxpayer’s money. Abigail fought her habitual scowl when thinking about that man. Unfortunately, she found herself thinking about him far too often.

“Well, now. I’m off to feed my husband and young’uns.”

“I’ll walk you out and lock up.” Abigail stood and took her keys off the ring at her waist. “Did you lock the back entrance?”

Lizzy stuttered to a halt and put her hand to her mouth. “Oh no. I’m sorry. I forgot.”

Abigail smiled and patted her shoulder. “I’ll get the door after I lock up the front. This is where all the rough types are, after all.”

“Right you are, and it’s early yet,” the other woman laughed, “Now, in an hour…”

“Just so.”

“Night, Ma’am.” Lizzy opened the door and headed out into the late afternoon sunlight.

“Good Evening.”

Abigail carefully adjusted the evergreen wreath hanging there, locked the door and tested it. The last thing she wanted was some hooligan coming in and spilling beer or worse, on her fine marble floors. She went directly to the rear entrance of the library and locked that door as well.

She’d leave by the back when she’d finished her business. The further she was from the saloon, the happier she’d be. Drunken men brought back unpleasant memories of her late husband. Drunk or sober he’d been charming, but when he was drunk he gambled and when he gambled, he lost. She hated having her hard earned wages lost to the turn of a card or the roll of the dice. In spite of it all, she missed him and she missed their loving even more. Just the thought of a man’s strong arms around her caused her breath to catch and her body to tremble.

Abigail sighed, then set about tending the fireplaces, putting out fires and laying a new one for the morning. It was growing colder, and it had snowed that morning. She was used to snow, but not quite so much as fell in the mountains of Colorado. Christmas was less than a week away and the countryside looked like a painting. Peaceful. Beautiful. It would be her first all alone. She was pleased she’d accepted this position, but she wished for some friends to share her time.

She returned to the main desk and began to put away her work for the day. The cards she’d created for the card catalog would need to be filed in the morning and the new books shelved. So many things to do.

A battered snow-dusted hat landed on her desk and she jumped with a shriek. Her gaze flew upward. Straight into the ice blue eyes of William Goldwolf. She couldn’t contain her growl of exasperation.

“How did you get in?”

He dangled a key in front of her.

“I see. Well, good evening, Mr. Goldwolf. What brings you into this useless house of worship for slow minds?”

He chuckled as she quoted him verbatim from the last library board meeting. She still couldn’t understand why he’d been asked to be a member of the board. He didn’t support their mission to educate the citizenry. She’d yet to meet a more quarrelsome man and she utterly refused to acknowledge the thrill that went through her whenever they were in the same room.

A smile tilted the corner of his mouth as he sat down on her desk, knowing how she hated it. Abigail bit the inside of her cheek to keep from chasing him off her desk, aflutter like an angry wet hen. An epithet he’d used to describe her on more than one occasion. She clutched the back of her chair, hoping to keep her temper…this time.

“Maybe I want to check out a book, Mrs. Kelly.” She raised her brows but kept her mouth closed. Abigail could do without further provocation this evening. “Isn’t it your job to help me find somethin’, what did you call it? Ah yeah, improving to the mind,” He chuckled as he quoted her, eastern accent and all.

She clutched the chair harder because she refused to get into an argument with this man today. “I can recommend a number of possibilities. Perhaps the Bible might be fitting.”

“Improving to the mind, sure enough, but where’s the fun in that?”

“Fun?” Abigail’s mouth fall open.

“Yeah, shouldn’t readin’ be fun?” He leaned over, set a single finger under her chin and pressed. She closed her open mouth and pulled her head away from his touch. Exasperating man! She would absolutely ignore that his touch had set her heart fluttering in a way she’d forgotten she could feel.

When the renegade vampires attempt to destroy a hundred years of peace, Larissa is caught in the crossfire. Eternal love and carnal nights can be her future if she survives.

Excerpt:

“Anything missing?” Garrick asked.

Larissa shook her head then charged back downstairs. “Why would they just mess up the place without stealing anything?” Her throat tightened. “It’ll take me hours to straighten this up in time for opening tomorrow.” Tears filled her eyes.

“Kids,” he said. “The door probably wasn’t closed tightly and the wind blew it open. I’ll have Ramon take a look at it.”

“I should still call the police. The store was vandalized.”

“Don’t. I know the police chief. I’ll mention it to him tomorrow. If you call, you’ll only have a bunch of cars out here and the gossip will spread all through town. You don’t need that kind of publicity.” He started calling on his cell phone.

“Who are you calling?” she asked.

“Ramon and Jordan. I’m telling them to come over now to help straighten up. Between the four of us, we’ll get your place in order.”

“But it’s so late.” Her words cracked.

“They won’t mind.” He hugged her. “You’ll see. We all work together here.”

His embrace felt heavenly warm and safe, made her feel protected and a little turned on. Heat rushed to her face, embarrassed by her physical response to his touch. What was wrong with her? He was showing her kindness and she was getting horny? She pulled away, avoiding his gaze. “Thank you, Garrick. I’ll get started on the front display.”

Twenty minutes later Ramon and Jordan entered the store. “Ramon Travere,” he said by introduction, taking her hand and locking his gaze with hers with an obvious flirtatious up-and-down once-over. Ramon was striking and hot. A few years younger than she with long blond hair that fell past his shoulders. He wore leather pants and boots and a black T-shirt with a bright-yellow smiley face with the addition of devil’s horns and tail attached. Have a nice eternity was inscribed below.

If Garrick was the mysterious and muscular predator, Ramon was the sleek and wild rock star.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding, Garrick,” Jordan exclaimed. “What a mess. Any idea who did it?”
Garrick shot Jordan a glance and her eyes widened. “Doesn’t matter. We’ll get everything ready for you, Larissa. Thank you for hiring me. Garrick said you needed the help.”

Garrick’s expression revealed no clue as to who really arranged the employment. For a college student, Larissa expected Jordan to be younger but she had to be in her late twenties. Her blonde hair was fashioned in a perfect French braid. Her clothes were casual but obviously pricy designer wear and usually far out of a college student’s budget. There was no rich-girl-entitlement attitude, Larissa knew plenty of them in her college. Jordan appeared to be a pleasant, smart and polite young woman.

“You’re welcome. I’m happy to have the help. I’ll start you with a few hours and when business picks up, we can add more. How does that sound?”

“Works for me,” Jordan said. “Tell me where you want me to start.”

While Larissa, Jordan and Garrick put the merchandise back in order, refolded and reorganized the displays, Ramon fixed the lock on the front door. The shock and fear of having her new store vandalized eased with the presence of the two men and even Jordan cast an aura of positive energy. Everything would work out well for her first day. The business would thrive.

“Finished,” Ramon announced. “You have a new Schlage deadbolt lock. If anyone tries getting in now, they’ll have to take down the door and frame with it. Want me to add strobe lights and security cameras, Larissa? I can rig some kind of metallic net to drop down and zap them.”

Larissa laughed. “No, the new locks are fine. Thanks. Send me the bill.”

He shook his head. “Garrick will take care of that.”

“That’s not necessary.”

Ramon walked up to her, took her hand in both of his and locked his gaze with hers. “I left my card on your cash register. If you ever need anything, just call.” His searing blue eyes had a mischievous glint and his lips twitched ever so slightly. Larissa felt her stomach tingle as if she were going down the big dip of a rollercoaster with her eyes closed and didn’t know if there was a bottom. Great, now she had the hots for two men? That had never happened to her before.

She tried counting back to when she last had a date. After four months she stopped counting. It was too depressing. No wonder she was responding to all the hot guys in New Hope. Maybe she should consider dating after her business got off the ground. After the holidays.

“Thank you, Ramon.” Her words came out in a breathy whisper. His name rolled off her tongue. He continued to hold her hand and a wave of dizziness passed through her. Closing her eyes, she hoped the sensation would pass. But then a flash of detailed images drifted through her mind.

She was in a large living room, a place she’d never seen before. Ramon stood naked before her in front of a blazing fireplace, the flickering light dancing over his body, reflecting over every cut and angle of his muscles. He was gorgeous and aroused, his cock hard and thick. His eyes glowed with an otherworldly blue glow. Holding out his hand to her, she stepped forward and noticed that she too was naked. The heat of the fireplace warmed her skin. She didn’t know why she wasn’t questioning the situation. She only knew it seemed right and couldn’t resist.

Lie with me. Ramon’s words entered her head but she didn’t see his mouth move.

Yes, she answered with her own thoughts as she took his hand. Gently, he lifted her in his arms and laid her on a thick fur on the floor. His body eased on top of her. Yes, this is so good.

Larissa. Garrick’s voice called her from a distance. The light from the fireplace highlighted his face. He was smiling despite the darkness in his eyes.

She held out a hand to him, asking him to join them. He nodded and the next moment he was naked and lying beside her too. Two men, amazing. “Garrick,” she whispered as his mouth came down on hers at the same time Ramon plunged his cock into her.

“Larissa!” Garrick shouted. She blinked and saw him standing beside the door to the storeroom.
Images of the old house, the fireplace and Ramon and Garrick making love to her vanished, yet her heart still raced. Her vagina continued to contract on empty space and her nipples bore stiff points through her sweater. She glanced at Ramon. Smiling mischievously, he stared at her through half-lidded eyes. “Are you okay, Larissa? You look dazed.” His mouth twitched in a wicked and mischievous grin.

“Yes,” she breathed. “I’m fine.”

“Everything looks in order in here,” Garrick said. “Please check on her tomorrow. Make sure nothing is missing. You can go, Ramon.”

Ramon straightened and nodded.

“Thanks for your help,” Larissa said. Her heart continued to pound and her body was still heated and aroused.

“My pleasure.” He turned to Garrick. “Night, Garrick.”

“I’ll be in touch,” he said. The moment they were alone, Garrick’s gaze swept over her in a spine-melting look that made her nervous and horny. “You still seem shaken. Don’t worry about the break-in.”

Happy Release Day to Kate Hill - Storm Stallion out today!

Horsemen--Single Title to Series

This week Storm Stallion, the eighth book in my Horsemen series, is available from Ellora's Cave. When I wrote Dream Stallion back in 2003, I had intended for it to be a stand alone book, but when it ended I didn't want to leave the world of Horsemen behind. I was thrilled that my readers asked if there would be other Horsemen books as well. Now in 2008 I still love writing about the Horsemen as much as when I worked on the first draft of Dream Stallion. Every Horseman is different and opens up a new part of their world.

Storm Stallion focuses on Ivan and Bala who were introduced as secondary characters in Mystery Stallion. Ivan has come a long way as a troublemaker turned hero. He's been so much fun to write and I truly hope readers enjoy getting to know him and Bala better.

Thank you!

Kate

Storm Stallion
by Kate Hill
Book 8 in the Horsemen Series

Blurb:

From the moment Ivan rescued Bala from the inferno that wiped out her village, he has been in love with her. Knowing the young widow's heart belongs to her husband who died from the Horseman Plague, he struggles to keep his passion for her a secret.

Bala is burdened by guilt over the lustful fantasies she's been having about the handsome Fighting Carrier. When he surprises them both by asking her to marry him, she accepts. With Ivan she enjoys a sexual freedom she has never experienced before. Despite their love for each other, their marriage is threatened by the shadow of her first husband.

Ivan and Bala realize they're meant to be together, but first they have to find their way back to each other.

The following excerpt from Storm Stallion is for readers 18 and over.

"I truly miss a pleasure flight at dusk," Bala said, gazing skyward. "There's nothing quite like soaring through the skies at this time."

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Ivan said. "I'd have taken you."

Bala glanced at him with a slight smile. "I've never really talked about it since--"

She didn't need to continue. Apparently she and Ajay had flown together often in the evenings.

"It won't be the same as with Ajay, but we could fly if you like," he ventured.

"That sounds like a great idea," Violeta said. "Go ahead, Bala. Grigori and I are here. We'll stay with Reena. She's having fun playing with Alexi. You should enjoy yourself too."

Bala looked pensive but eagerness glistened in her dark eyes. "I really shouldn't."

"Go," Grigori urged. "It's a good night for a pleasure flight."

"But--"

"You've ridden Ivan before. He's a smoother flyer," Violeta said.

"But there's always been a reason. I mean a destination." Bala stammered a bit, then glanced at Ivan. "It is a nice night though."

"Yes. I'm afraid I don't have any tack with me."

"I couldn't possibly ride you without--"

"You can borrow mine," Grigori said.

Grigori was rangier than Ivan, but his tack would serve for a short pleasure flight.

"You see." Ivan smiled and held Bala's gaze. "We have no excuses."

"Apparently." She glanced at Violeta and Grigori who pretended to look innocent. "I'll change my clothes."

"I'll help you with the saddle." Grigori walked to the fence where he had left his saddle and harness.

"I don't think she wants to go," Ivan said as he adjusted the harness and slipped it on. Harnesses fit over a Horseman's man-torso for a rider to hold in flight.

"She does," Grigori told him, shaking out his blanket. He placed it and the saddle on
Ivan's back.

"Didn't seem like it."

"Just enjoy the flight. You both worry too much."

A short time later, Bala stepped out of the cottage. She'd placed a light cloak over her dress and wore boots instead of shoes. Her long hair was braided down her back. The style made her look young and innocent. Ivan's gut clenched. He longed to feel her on his back. He fantasized about them flying without tack. Her legs would hug his equine sides and she would cling to his man-torso, her soft breasts pressing against him.

Wait.

If he kept thinking this way, he'd become aroused and while wearing his beast-half there would be no hiding it. Not only would it be terribly embarrassing, but Bala would probably never speak to him again.

"Ready?" Ivan asked with a smile. He extended his hand to her and after a moment's hesitation, she approached and mounted with ease. Having been married to a Horseman, Bala was an excellent rider with no fear of flight.

Ivan nearly closed his eyes and sighed with pleasure. He loved having her on his back.

"We won't be long," Bala said to Grigori and Violeta.

"Take your time," Violeta said. "We're not in a rush."

"See." Ivan grinned and glanced at her over his shoulder. "No rush. Where would you like to go?"

"I don't know."

"Then I'll surprise you."

"You always seem to," she teased.

BLURB:

Meet the brave and fearless Visola; a woman unlike any you've ever encountered. Her wit and humor take her through the darkest of dangers with a smile always on her face--and her smile only grows larger as the odds become more impossible. With no concern for her own safety, Visola dives headfirst into the throes of battle to protect the people and country she loves, even if it means facing her worst enemy--the one man who can get inside her head and break her down like no other: her own husband...

EXCERPT:

When Aazuria entered the room, her eyes were immediately drawn to Visola’s wild red hair, which had recently been a lustrous mass of audacious curls. Now, her hair was limp. It hung against her head flat, frizzy and defeated. Aazuria’s eyes darted to the warrior’s sunken cheekbones and gaunt face. She saw the bruises on Visola’s neck before her eyes traveled further to the withered, wasted limbs. Every visible part of her friend’s body was covered in fresh scars. She saw the bandaged hands. Visola had been starved and tortured.

Perhaps in these modern times, even under the surface of the sea, kings, queens, and the aristocracy had close to zero significance. Perhaps the words and decrees which left Aazuria’s mouth would have minimal consequences. No one in the throne room felt this way as they awaited Aazuria’s judgment with bated breath. Sionna was standing aside, with her arms crossed. The newly-crowned queen gripped her husband’s sword tightly in her fist as Trevain and Elandria entered the room behind her.

Aazuria shifted her eyes to the man standing beside her friend. Her face was expressionless.

“Approach me, Vachlan,” she whispered.

The man began walking toward her. Although his stride was dignified, there was hesitation on his face. Visola began speaking, pleading words which Aazuria could not hear over the sound of her heart pounding in her ears.

When Vachlan was close enough to strike, Aazuria gazed at him with death in her eyes.

“Kneel,” she commanded him. Her chest was rising and falling perceptibly.

Vachlan knew that this would be a very unwise thing to do, but he owed it to Aazuria. He owed it to Visola, and to Adlivun—the nation he had once called home.  He lowered his head and dropped to one knee before the queen, saluting her across his chest. His eyes were level with the sword she held, and he could see the veins bulging through her translucent pale skin from how tightly she clutched it.

“It would be futile to order you punished,” she said slowly. “No one can even attempt to hurt you as much as you have hurt her.”

“I know,” he answered quietly.

“But it is my duty to try.”

She struck out with her sword, slicing the air until the blade collided with his face, knocking Vachlan off his knees and onto the floor. Aazuria could vaguely hear Visola screaming for her to stop, but she was already standing over Vachlan and forcing the tip of her sword between his teeth. Her previous strike had resulted in a huge bleeding gash along the side of his handsome face, but it had not been enough to kill him. She was poised to finish the job.

Vachlan moved his tongue against the steel, tasting the freshly-sharpened metal edge garnished with the metallic taste of his own blood. It is rare that the wine so perfectly accompanies the main dish, he thought as he swallowed the coppery fluid accumulating in his mouth. Kind of like a German Pinot Noir. He looked into the azure eyes of Adlivun’s queen and realized that this was no longer the innocent, charitable philanthropist he had known hundreds of years ago. She was hard. He wondered what percentage of the tempered rage behind her eyes he was responsible for generating.

“One reason.” Aazuria was demanding. “Give me one convincing reason that I should not thrust my blade directly through your skull.”

EXCERPT:

“If you don’t mind me saying so, Mr. McLeod, you seem quite domesticated,” Savannah said in a haughty tone.

Gabriel laughed. “Like a favorite pet, Miss Russell?” He glanced toward her with humor. “I always think domestication ruins the better part of the beast.”

“But you wouldn’t want a wild dog in your house,” Savannah protested. “And horses must be tamed.”

Gabriel nodded. “I would hate to think you compared me to a horse or a dog, miss. I hope I have better manners than that?” he asked, raising his eyebrows mockingly toward Savannah. “Though, I agree, horses are most useful for our purpose when tamed, but I wonder if they truly enjoy working for us?” He looked toward me, although he did not push me into the conversation.

He let out a long theatrical sigh. “Domesticated cats, dogs. Domesticated women. Wonderful creatures. Wouldn’t you agree, Miss Sullivan?” He looked toward me wickedly. I had bolted so hard in the rocker at his words I had nearly flown onto the floor. I watched him with wide eyes, wondering why he pushed Savannah so.

Savannah replied, “Now you are offensive, sir.” She vibrated with anger.

“Isn’t that what all young women long to be?” Gabriel asked Savannah, setting down the filled mugs with a clunk. “Domesticated. Demure. Tamed to the needs and ways of their husbands?”

“You know perfectly well you are describing the ideal wife,” Savannah spat out.

“Am I?” he asked, sounding unconvinced. “What do you think, Miss Sullivan?” he turned to me. “Is that what you long to be, a domesticated woman?”

“No!” I blurted out before I could stop myself.

“Rissa!” Savannah scolded me, eyes flashing. She had begun to breathe heavily, and I feared she would faint with her tightly laced corset.

I blushed but met Gabriel’s eyes. “No,” I said. “I have no desire to match that description. Slightly less clumsy, perhaps,” I muttered.

“Yes, I agree,” Gabriel said, causing me to worry he agreed with my assessment about my clumsiness. “Domestication is akin to docility which is an unattractive trait in a woman.” He smiled knowingly at me, and I felt a flash of pleasure.

“Do you speak in earnestness, sir, or are you in jest?” Savannah demanded. When Gabriel merely turned to look at her, she continued. “Men want docile, demure women,” she expounded, as though teaching a rudimentary fact to Gabriel.

“Well, pardon me, ma’am, for not learning my lessons well,” he replied, nodding his head deferentially.

I watched Savannah’s face become flushed red with anger and was worried she would erupt. She generally kept her temper under control, but, when it blew, it was a frightening thing to behold.

“I’d actually like to meet a young woman who can think for herself and doesn’t want only what her father or husband wants.” His quiet statement made my pulse quicken.

Savannah scoffed, “That path leads only to misery.”

“Or tremendous contentment,” Gabriel countered.

Savannah stood, knocking into the table with such force she caused tea to spill out of the mugs. “I will not sit here any longer and listen to your insolent beliefs,” she declared. “Rissa?” She turned toward me expectantly, then headed toward the door.

I looked at Gabriel with remorse, wanting to have spent longer time in his company. “I enjoyed our conversation. Maybe we could continue it one day at the school?” I watched him, hopeful he would agree.

He smiled, releasing a sigh of relief. “I would enjoy that very much, Miss Clarissa.”

I had forgotten how his voice could feel like a caress. I closed my eyes for a moment, having missed hearing his gentle baritone. No matter how much I had enjoyed his letters, I had missed him.

As Trevor helped Lila up the porch steps, she wrapped her arms around his neck and brushed her lips against his jaw. She hadn't taken her hands off him since they'd left Tate's.

"I love to feel your stubble." She ran her fingers along his cheek. "It's sexy."

"Keys?" He held out his hand and waited as she dug through her bag. She had him rock hard and ready to go. The fact that she'd rested her hand on his thigh the whole ride home hadn't helped matters. It was the alcohol lowering her inhibitions, but that didn't make it any easier not to respond.

"Here they are." She dropped them into his hand. "Come inside with me."

He opened the door and led her into the foyer. As soon as he let her go, she stumbled forward. He caught her by the waist and pulled her against him. He couldn't take his eyes away from her lips.

"Do you want to kiss me?" Her warm breath caressed his mouth.

More than you know.

"Let me help you upstairs. I don't want you to fall down the steps." He scooped her up and carried her to the staircase. She was so light and dainty. She was still his perfect fit.

"You didn't answer my question." She placed soft, open-mouth kisses along his neck as he made his way to her old bedroom. He remembered sneaking up those steps many times, while her father slept down the hall. They still creaked, but this time he didn't have to worry about getting caught.

"Of course I want to kiss you." He pushed the door open with his shoulder and set her down by the bed.

She closed her eyes and leaned into him. He swiped the hair from her face, took her chin between his fingers, and placed a chaste kiss on her lips.

She opened one eye and peered at him, waiting for more. "That's it?" Disappointment flooded her beautiful features.

"For tonight." He tapped the tip of her nose with his finger. "I want you to remember when I kiss you."

"I'll remember." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "You're not easy to forget."

He pried her arms from his body. "Believe me, I want to, but not tonight."

"Why?"

"Because four hours ago you ran away from me," he said. "Something made you run. Tell me why." He may not have wanted to take advantage of her physically while she was intoxicated, but he didn't see why he couldn't let her drunken lips tell him what she was afraid of.

"I can't."

"You can't what?" He needed to know what she thought about the two of them.

"I'm tired now." She lifted her dress over her head and tossed it in the corner of the room. She stood before him in nothing but her white push-up bra and matching lace thong.

"Hell." He couldn't take his eyes off her toned, tanned body. He mindlessly licked his lips when he discovered her rose-colored nipples poking through the thin, silky material of her bra. Struggling with himself, he tried not to lower his gaze. He lost the battle as he greedily took in her scantily covered sex.

"Want to kiss me now?" She ran her fingers down her neck and over her breasts. "Want to touch me like this?" She moved her hand down her stomach and to the waistband of her panties.

He stepped closer to her and grabbed her wrist. He had to get her to stop or he'd lose all control.

"You want to do it?"
